Challenge 12: Team Recruitment Project
Before You Start
This challenge is designed to prepare you for the written exam. During the exam, you will be required to complete a similar task within 30 minutes using Microsoft Excel.
For this reason, it is very important that you practice independently during class. Try to solve the task on your own and do not use external help, AI tools, or online resources, as these will not be available during the exam.
If you need assistance, you are welcome to ask the instructor. However, before asking a question, make sure that you have carefully read the task description and instructions. Many questions can be answered by reading the requirements more closely.
The goal is not only to complete the challenge, but also to develop the confidence and skills needed to solve similar tasks independently under time constraints.
Scenario
You are a performance coach working for a professional sports club.
Your club wants to recruit athletes for both:
- Football
- Basketball
You have received physical testing results from more than 200 athletes.
Your task is to develop your own evaluation systems and identify the most suitable athletes for each sport.
Part 1: Microsoft Excel
Create Your Own Performance Indices
The dataset (download it!) contains the following variables:
- Age
- 30m Sprint (s)
- Vertical Jump (cm)
- Bench Press 1RM (kg)
- 3000m Time (s)
Tasks
- Create your own Football Index formula (see an example later).
- Create your own Basketball Index formula.
- Use all available variables in both formulas.
- The two formulas must be different.
- Sort the athletes from highest to lowest score.
- Identify the Top athlete for football.
- Identify the Top athlete for basketball.
- Create at least one chart to support your conclusions.
Useful help: Creating Your Own Index
You can combine variables using mathematical operators:
+
-
*
/
()
Example:
=(D2*1)+(E2*0,5)-(C2*3)+(F2*10)
This is only an example.
You should create your own formula based on your understanding of the sport.
Important
Think carefully about each variable.
Questions to consider:
- Is sprint speed important?
- Is vertical jumping ability important?
- Is upper limb strength important?
- Is endurance important?
Part 2: Microsoft Word
Recruitment Report
Prepare a professional report (approximately one page).
Include:
- Your Football Index formula
- Your Basketball Index formula
- Explanation of both formulas
- Top football athlete
- Top basketball athlete
Questions to Consider
- Why did you choose these formulas?
- Why did you give more importance to certain variables?
- What are the strengths and weaknesses of your evaluation system?
Part 3: Microsoft PowerPoint
Recruitment Presentation
Your club's management team is looking for recommendations on which athletes should be recruited for football and basketball.
Prepare a short presentation (approximately 5 minutes) and present your findings as if you were reporting to the club directors.
Presentation Structure
1. Title Slide
2. Explanation of Football Index
3. Explanation of Basketball Index
4. Recommended Athletes
Requirements
• 4 slides
• At least one chart from Excel
• Clear and readable slides
• Keywords instead of long paragraphs
What Should You Explain?
Your presentation should not only show the results, but also explain:
• Why you created your Football Index the way you did
• Why you created your Basketball Index the way you did
• Which physical qualities were most important for each sport
• Why the selected athletes achieved the highest scores
• Why the club should recruit these athletes
Important
Imagine that the club directors have never seen the dataset before.
Your job is to convince them that your recruitment decisions are supported by data and logical reasoning.
Create all slide content before formatting and review the presentation in Slide Show mode before submission.

- Excel file
- Word report
- PowerPoint presentation
Goal
Learn how coaches and performance analysts combine multiple performance indicators into a single decision-making system.
There is no single correct solution. Different coaches may value speed, strength, jumping ability, endurance, and age differently. Your task is to justify your decisions using data.
